Why It Works

Key Benefits

🧪
Seven Ingredients per Serving
Each 2-capsule serving contains melatonin 2 mg, valerian root extract 150 mg, chamomile flower extract 100 mg, GABA 100 mg, L-tryptophan 100 mg, lemon balm extract 100 mg and passion flower extract 100 mg. The ingredients have been studied mostly on their own; VitaNight itself has not been studied.
🌙
Contains Melatonin: Can Cause Drowsiness
In a meta-analysis of 19 trials in people with primary sleep disorders, melatonin shortened the time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes compared with placebo, and the authors described the effect as modest. In a study of 20 healthy men, melatonin doses from 0.1 mg to 10 mg increased self-reported sleepiness and fatigue. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking VitaNight, or until you know how it affects you.
🌿
Valerian, Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Passion Flower: Mixed or Limited Evidence
Reviews of valerian for sleep disagree: one review of 60 studies judged it could be a safe and effective sleep herb but noted inconsistent results and variable extract quality, while another review of 29 controlled trials found that most showed no significant difference from placebo. A meta-analysis of five chamomile trials found lower sleep-quality scores (PSQI), with high variation between trials. Lemon balm and passion flower have been studied mainly for anxiety, in a small number of trials.
🔬
GABA and L-Tryptophan: Limited Evidence
A systematic review of 14 placebo-controlled trials of oral GABA found limited evidence for stress and very limited evidence for sleep. A meta-analysis of tryptophan supplements found shorter time awake after falling asleep, with larger effects at 1 g or more per day and no effect on other sleep measures; VitaNight contains 100 mg per serving.
🩺
Not a Treatment for Insomnia
VitaNight is a dietary supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. A 2017 American Academy of Sleep Medicine guideline suggested that clinicians not use melatonin, tryptophan or valerian as a treatment for sleep-onset or sleep-maintenance insomnia in adults (weak recommendations). If sleep trouble is persistent, speak with a doctor.

Science

Clinical Evidence

Published research relevant to this product. These studies were generally not conducted on this specific product.

🔬
In a meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials (1,683 people with primary sleep disorders), melatonin shortened the time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes and increased total sleep time by about 8 minutes compared with placebo; the authors described the effects as modest
🔬
A 2017 American Academy of Sleep Medicine guideline suggested that clinicians not use melatonin, tryptophan or valerian as a treatment for sleep-onset or sleep-maintenance insomnia in adults (weak recommendations)
🔬
In 20 healthy men, melatonin at 0.1 to 10 mg taken at midday increased sleep duration and self-reported sleepiness and fatigue compared with placebo
🔬
In a systematic review of 50 controlled studies, the most commonly reported side effects of oral melatonin related to fatigue, mood, or psychomotor and neurocognitive performance; a few studies noted effects on blood pressure, heart rate and glucose metabolism, possibly including interactions with antihypertensive drugs
🔬
In an analysis of 31 commercial melatonin supplements, melatonin content ranged from 83% below to 478% above the labelled amount, and more than 71% did not meet the label within 10%
🔬
In a study of 7 healthy volunteers, a dose of the antidepressant fluvoxamine raised blood melatonin about 2.8-fold compared with placebo (the study measured the body's own melatonin); citalopram had no significant effect
🔬
In a Cochrane review of melatonin for jet lag, case reports suggested that people with epilepsy and people taking warfarin may come to harm from melatonin
🔬
A systematic review of 60 studies of valerian (meta-analyses of subjective sleep quality in 10 studies and anxiety in 8 studies) concluded that valerian could be a safe and effective herb to promote sleep, but noted inconsistent results between studies, possibly due to the variable quality of extracts; no severe adverse events were linked to valerian in the studies reviewed
🔬
A systematic review of 29 controlled trials of valerian found that most showed no significant difference from placebo in healthy people or in people with sleep disturbance or insomnia, and none of the most recent, most rigorous studies found significant effects; valerian was associated with only rare adverse events
🔬
A case report described a 53-year-old woman with cholestatic liver injury after a month of using a herbal 'liver-cleansing' product and a nightly herbal 'sleep aid' listing valerian among several constituents; the injury could not be attributed to valerian alone, and liver tests improved after the products were stopped
🔬
A meta-analysis of five trials of chamomile found lower Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores than control (mean difference -1.88 points), with high variation between trials; chamomile did not improve sleep duration, sleep efficiency or daytime functioning in the studies reviewed, and most studies used passive monitoring for adverse events
🔬
A review noted that some people with respiratory allergy to weed pollen such as ragweed and mugwort may also have hypersensitivity reactions to herbal products from cross-reactive Compositae (Asteraceae) plants such as chamomile
🔬
A systematic review of 14 placebo-controlled human trials of oral GABA found limited evidence for effects on stress and very limited evidence for effects on sleep, and called for more studies
🔬
A meta-analysis of tryptophan supplementation (4 studies analysed) found shorter time awake after sleep onset, with a larger effect at 1 g or more per day than below 1 g, and no effect on other sleep components
🔬
A review of non-nutritional tryptophan use noted occasional side effects (tremor, nausea, dizziness) mainly at high doses, rare serotonin syndrome when tryptophan is combined with drugs that enhance serotonin such as antidepressants, and eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome in 1989 linked to contaminated production batches of supplemental tryptophan; the author described the safety database as small and largely anecdotal
🔬
A systematic review and meta-analysis of lemon balm trials in people with symptoms of anxiety or depression found lower anxiety and depression scores than placebo without serious side effects, but with high variation between the small number of trials; sleep was not the outcome analysed
🔬
In 41 healthy adults aged 18-35, one week of passion flower tea was rated better for sleep quality than placebo tea in sleep diaries; the authors called the findings initial
🔬
A systematic review of 9 trials (1 to 30 days long) of passion flower preparations found that most reported reduced anxiety, with the effect less evident in people with mild anxiety, and no adverse effects were observed
