Science behind this product
Protein supplements and muscle: A meta-analysis of 49 randomized trials (1,863 healthy adults) found that protein supplementation increased gains in muscle strength, fat-free mass and muscle size during resistance training lasting 6 weeks or more. The effect on fat-free mass was smaller with increasing age, and no further gain was seen once total protein intake exceeded about 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day. These trials did not test this product. Morton 2018
Plant versus animal protein: A meta-analysis of 16 trials found that protein source (animal or plant) did not affect changes in absolute lean mass or muscle strength, although animal protein was favored for percent lean mass, especially in adults under 50. Lim 2021
Fava bean and yeast protein: No trial of fava bean protein isolate on muscle outcomes was found in PubMed. In one 6-month trial in 92 Chinese older adults, yeast protein and whey protein each improved walking speed and physical performance scores compared with no supplement, with no difference between groups in appendicular muscle mass or handgrip strength; this was not the same product. Huijing 2026
Protein and the kidneys: A 2026 meta-analysis of 22 trials in adults without chronic kidney disease found that high-protein diets increased estimated GFR and did not significantly change serum creatinine, with no consistent biochemical evidence of kidney injury; most trials were short and relied on creatinine-based estimates, so the long-term effects are uncertain. A 2025 systematic review found the evidence on protein intake and kidney disease insufficient. Ask your clinician for your protein target if you have kidney disease. Teixeira Silva 2026 · Lamina 2025
Fava beans and G6PD deficiency: Fava bean ingestion is a recognized trigger of acute hemolytic episodes in people with G6PD deficiency. Whether fava bean protein isolate triggers hemolysis was not established in the sources found, so people with G6PD deficiency should ask their doctor first. Prashanth 2025 · Tesfamariam 2026
Protein amount versus the trials: In the 49-trial meta-analysis above, adding supplemental protein gave no further gain in fat-free mass once total protein intake passed about 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day, which is about 112 g a day for a 70 kg adult; one serving of this product provides 21 g of protein. The abstracts of that meta-analysis and of the plant-versus-animal protein meta-analysis do not state the supplement doses used, so this page cannot compare a serving with the doses in the trials. Morton 2018
Cocoa and trace metals: Cocoa powder and chocolate products are known to sometimes contain cadmium and lead from the environment. In a US Food and Drug Administration analysis of cocoa powder and chocolate products bought at retail, cadmium ranged from 0.004 to 3.15 mg/kg and lead from below the detection limit to 0.38 mg/kg, and both rose with the percentage of cocoa solids. This product lists two cocoa powders; no heavy-metal test results for it were provided, so this page cannot state its levels. Abt 2018
